Benjamin Muller

Late 20th – 21st Century
Chief Cantor at the Great Synagogue (Van den Nestlei) / Shomre Hadass

Benjamin Muller served as the Chief Cantor of the Romi Goldmuntz Great Synagogue on Van den Nestlei. Renowned for his powerful, operatic tenor voice and deep knowledge of traditional Nusach (liturgical prayer modes), he has been a leading figure of the Antwerp cantorial heritage, keeping the traditional melodies alive and passing the legacy to the next generation.

Yossi (Jossi) Muller

21st Century
Cantor at the Great Synagogue (Van den Nestlei) / Shomre Hadass

Following in the footsteps of his father Benjamin Muller, Yossi Muller has also served as a cantor at the Great Synagogue. He preserves the unique family liturgical tradition, ensuring the continuity of the specific melodies and prayers of the Shomre Hadass community.

Chief Cantor Benzion Moskovitz

1907 – 1968
Guest Cantor and Community Leader

Born in Hungary, Moskovitz was one of the most celebrated European cantors of his era, renowned for his Viennese-style cantorial performance. In the late 1930s, after fleeing Nazi persecution, he spent a significant period in Antwerp leading services and inspiring the local community with his magnificent voice before later becoming the Chief Cantor of Amsterdam.

Abraham Jelenko

1893 – 1942 (Aged 48)
Voorzanger synagoge | Originally from Deutschkreutz, Austria | Resided at Charlottalei 57

Abraham Jelenko served as a dedicated voorzanger (cantor) for the Antwerp Jewish community. He lived at Charlottalei 57 with his wife Renée (née Bindiger). During the Nazi occupation of Belgium, he was arrested and deported. According to historical records, he was deported to Auschwitz and perished in August 1942.

Simon Davidovic

1905 – 1942 (Aged 37)
Voorzanger | Originally from Danylovo (now Ukraine) | Resided at Van Immerseelstraat 24

Simon Davidovic was a cantor (voorzanger) in Antwerp. He lived at Van Immerseelstraat 24 with his wife Cilika (née Kahan). He was arrested and deported during the Holocaust, dying in September 1942 at the young age of 37.

Uscher Felder

1905 – 1942 (Aged 37)
Voorzanger | Originally from Baligród, Poland | Resided at Van Immerseelstraat 27

Uscher Felder was a cantor (voorzanger) in Antwerp. He resided at Van Immerseelstraat 27 with his wife Roza Ruchel (née Beinhorn). He was deported to Auschwitz, where he perished in September 1942.

Jacob Feldinger

1897 – 1942 (Aged 45)
Voorzanger | Originally from Nizni Verecky (now Ukraine) | Resided at Lamorinièrestraat 163

Jacob Feldinger served the community as a cantor (voorzanger) in Antwerp. He lived at Lamorinièrestraat 163 with his wife Sarolta (née Horovitz). He was deported and murdered in the Holocaust in August 1942.
